About Us

We are dedicated to breeding our Portuguese Water dog to the breed standard and we are passionate about our dog Bella. She is well mannered and a joy to be with, whether we are traveling or at home. It has taken a lot of training to get to this point. If you have the time and energy to devote to this amazing breed, please read on.

Neutering

The puppy is sold on a non-breeding agreement. Our position on neutering is that it is something that is most properly done around the 15th or 18th month. Doing it sooner can affect the puppies physical development. Therefore, we will sell the dog intact and registered in our name. Upon receipt of vet confirmation of neutering, we will appropriately transfer the ownership to your name.

Socializing

We make a concerted effort to socialize the puppies early; this is very important in creating a well balanced dog. It is something that should be continued throughout the formative months. We are proud to say that of Bellas 17 pups we have sold to date, there has not been one report of dog or human aggressiveness.

Exercise and Training

It is essential, in the first 18 months of life, that the pup is not strenuously exercised. The bones are forming and strengthening at this time and excess pounding on the joints during this time is not recommended. Long walks or jogs with the master are not recommended until the pup has physically matured.

Playing with balls, sticks and just letting the pup play at its own level, is what is ideal. Also the most important exercise is having the pup walk with you every day. This is mentally and physically stimulating for your pup. The length of time increases as the pup matures.  This is an active dog that needs 30-45 minutes of brisk exercise every day, as well as a couple of shorter play times daily. This helps the dog work off its natural excessive energy. If you can’t do this, you will have a frustrated dog that will display bad habits. Boredom is something to be avoided. They are an intelligent breed and require both physical and mental stimulation. We also suggest that you participate in obedience training with an experienced handler when the pup is young (four months).
